7 Steps to Navigate a Career Transition

So, the time has come for a new adventure, and you’re ready to leap into a new career.

Congratulations! This is equal parts courageous, brave, and scary! Career transitions can be exciting and challenging all at the same time.

Here are 7 next steps to help you navigate a career transition:

Reflect

Take some time to assess your skills, strengths, interests, and values. Know what you’re passionate about and understand how and why these connect to your new career path.

How do you want these to show up in your next position? Next team? Company?

Research

Look at the various roles in the industry you want to join. Understand the current job market, any required skills, and qualifications for your new career.

Pursue informational interviews

Talk to people! I can’t recommend this one enough, and I have every one of my coachees engage in cold emailing because it’s so valuable and vital.

Taking the time for informational interviews with professionals in the field you hope to enter will allow you to gain insights into the industry and get advice about making the transition.

(And, bonus: one of the people you meet with could be a great mentor or help with a future referral!)

Boost necessary skills

When venturing onto a new career path, take the time to acquire any new skills you know will help you achieve your outcome. There are so many online platforms that offer cost-effective and flexible learning. Dedicating time to develop your skills shows your commitment to making the transition.

This is also a great time to complete the certifications you’ve been putting off!

Update your résumé and LinkedIn

This is the perfect opportunity to showcase all of those transferable skills! Give that résumé and LinkedIn profile a refresh (or complete overhaul!) to reflect your skills, experiences, and goals aligned to the new career field.

Don’t think you need help with yours? Check out this list of common objections to see how enlisting a thought partner truly can alleviate some of the stress and split all of the thinking along the way.

Be open

You never know where that next opportunity will come from; be open to unexpected opportunities or different pathways into this new industry. Being adaptable will help you as you make the transition.

This post on Networking will get you thinking about how to tap into your current community for knowledge and support.

Invest in a coach

Consider working with a career coach to help guide you through the transition. A coach will provide you with valuable strategies and insights. Plus, they’ll be your cheerleader as you navigate the transition!

Most importantly, believe in yourself and stay confident in your abilities!
