How to Manage Time and Stay Productive

Let’s face it, no matter when you begin, or which stage you’re in, searching for a job is a full-time job.

While some of us look for our next opportunity while still in our current role, keeping ourselves on track can be made even harder when we have a fluid schedule and only have a job search to focus on!

You can imagine, then, how managing your time effectively is the secret weapon to your strategic (and healthy!) job hunt.

Here are 7 ways to keep you on track:

Define clear goals.

First, get clear on the values you want from a company and role and which ones you’d like to ideally get to use daily. Then, be open! Investigate new industries, roles, and companies that align with both.

Having clear goals rooted in values sharpens your focus and prevents you from wasting time on irrelevant opportunities. This is a huge part of finding a good fit; allow yourself a few days on this step alone.

Outline a structured schedule.

Now that you’ve got some new ideas floating in your head on where you can go and what you can do next, dedicate specific hours each day to research, networking, and applying for jobs.

Structure your day with breaks, long and short, to ensure you maintain energy and enthusiasm! Time blocking is an excellent way to keep it all in check and stay sane in the meantime.

Prioritize… ruthlessly.

Not all job search activities carry equal weight. Prioritize tasks based on their impact. Focus on networking, customizing your résumé, and preparing for interviews.

Yes, you should put the work in to outline your values. Once you’ve got them locked, though, don’t spin your wheels. Move on to the next step in the process.

Keep to your regular routine.

Establish a daily routine to maintain consistency. Wake up early, exercise, and dress as if you were going to work. A routine provides a sense of normalcy, boosting your productivity and confidence.

For me, this looks like blocking time to make my morning tea, have quiet time, and make my bed. Then, I get ready for the day and jump into my work. I also do my best to start my day at the same time each morning.

Practice self-care.

We can all agree job searching can be taxing. I can’t stress this one enough: Don't neglect your favorite personal treats like meditation, sports, or spending time with loved ones while job searching! When it’s time to close your laptop for the afternoon, close it!

You’ll have good days and not-so-productive ones, and this is where grace for yourself comes in. When you focus your job search holistically - meaning that each part of you is involved in the hunt, not just when you’re hitting “submit” on an application - you’ll be able to approach it with a clear mind and renewed energy.

I promise there are enough hours in the day (if you structure them well!) to get it all done. Be sure to rest and find ways to integrate joy.

Take a break to learn something new.

While you’re at it, if you have the time, use your time to upskill. Take online courses, attend online conferences, or complete certifications you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s time to learn a new software or pick up light coding.

Continuous curiosity enhances your skill set, and potential employers love it! It demonstrates your proactive attitude and showcases how dedicated you are to personal and professional growth.

Stay organized.

Keep track of your applications, interviews, and follow-ups in one main spreadsheet. This way, you’ll know which jobs have what collateral and when to follow up.

Organization prevents confusion and ensures you're always prepared for the next step!

What about a freebie?!

Keeping it all straight in your head is tough, so I’ve created a quick and easy job application tracker so you can note down:

  • Position, company, base comp

  • Your interest level

  • Where you are in the process

  • Pros and Cons of the role so you can assess benefits vs. downsides

  • Follow-up notes from recent conversations (or to remind yourself when you follow up with the recruiter!)

  • Whether or not you’ve sent your thank you notes

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: job searching isn’t for the faint of heart! You'll maintain a positive and proactive mindset throughout your job search by keeping your eye on the prize, staying organized, following a routine, and prioritizing your time throughout the week.

Oh! And I do have one final tip:

Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

All of these things can be daunting, especially with so many things to keep track of. If you’d like a thought partner along the way, let’s put our heads together and get to work. Having an accountability partner to encourage you along will save you time and increase your chances of success.

Here’s to keeping on track and on target,

🥂 nicole:)
